There
has been an interest for some years in Scottish dance music circles
to blend traditional tunes with rhythms found more often in contemporary
dance clubs. Cappercaillie even had a hit record a few years ago, and
bands such as Shooglenifty and the Afro-Celt Sound System are popular
in the more adventurous dance venues. The young band of musicians from
the highlands of Scotland are continuing the trend with this CD of dance
music. The music of this band cooks along nicely, with strong bass and
drum lines anchoring the melodies with a choppy rhythm guitar. They
are not constrained to rigidly keeping the 16 bar structure of sets
of tunes, often adding bridging sections before launching into another
tune. It is all interestingly and skillfully done.
